About MN Fishing Lakes
MN Fishing Lakes is an independently run guide to fishing in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. We built it because planning a Minnesota fishing trip usually means juggling a half-dozen tabs — DNR LakeFinder for survey data, a weather app, a USGS gauge page, the regulations handbook, and a forum thread for the bite. This site pulls that information into one place: lake profiles, species guides, current conditions, forecasts, and plain-English regulation summaries.
We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources or any government agency. Always confirm current seasons, limits, and license requirements with the official DNR before you fish.
Who's Behind This
I'm Darrell Donaghy, the person who writes and maintains this site. I grew up in Bemidji, on the doorstep of Lake Bemidji and Cass Lake, and now live on Lake Minnetonka with my wife, our four boys, and two dogs who think every boat ride is for them. Boating and fishing aren't a side project for me — it's most weekends, spring through ice-out, somewhere on Minnesota water.
I built this site because I got tired of the same six browser tabs every time I planned a trip. The lake data, DNR survey numbers, and gear breakdowns here come from that same process — I use this site myself before I launch. The trip reports on the blog are real outings, not stock copy.

Where Our Data Comes From
Every data point on the site traces back to a source, and we'd rather show you fewer numbers than made-up ones:
- Minnesota DNR (public data): lake surveys, fish population and abundance data, stocking records, and regulation information from DNR LakeFinder and published DNR resources.
- U.S. Geological Survey: streamflow and water-level readings from USGS Water Services gauges.
- Weather providers: current conditions and forecasts, including the barometric pressure data behind our fishing forecast.
- The Minnesota fishing community: reader-submitted reports and feedback, which we review before featuring.
How Our Content Is Made
Lake and conditions pages are generated from the data sources above and refresh automatically as new readings come in. Editorial guides — species how-tos, seasonal previews, and destination round-ups — are drafted with the help of research software and reviewed before publishing, with regulations and dates checked against official DNR sources.
Spot something wrong — an outdated regulation, a bad lake stat, a broken link? Tell us via the contact page and we'll fix it. Corrections make the site better for every angler who visits after you.
Conservation First
Minnesota's fisheries are a shared resource. We encourage selective harvest, proper catch-and-release technique, aquatic invasive species prevention (clean, drain, dry), and respect for seasons and slot limits — they exist so the walleye bite is still there for the next generation.
