Trip Report: A Quiet September Morning Back on Lake Bemidji

I grew up in Bemidji, so this one's personal. Dropped in at the Nymore Beach ramp on the south end of the lake — the same launch I used as a teenager, though it's been resurfaced since then. It's crazy how much has built up around here since my high school days, new houses where there used to be woods, but the lake itself feels exactly the same. Same color water, same tree line across the bay, same feeling of being small on a big lake early in the morning.

The water was glass that day — not a ripple, which on a September morning up here usually means a slow bite, and it was. I fished the north end near the inlet where the current comes in and didn't catch much of anything worth writing home about. Didn't really matter. Some mornings on the water aren't about the numbers.

One thing that hasn't changed: Nymore Beach draws a real cross-section of boats, from tin fishing boats to genuinely nice rigs. Saw a guy at the launch backing his boat down with a pristine AMG wagon — almost went over to talk cars and ask about his tow setup, but he looked way too stressed trying to unhook his Lund from the trailer to want company. I get it. Everyone's been that guy at the ramp.

Don't sleep on Lake Bemidji just because it's smaller than some of the destination lakes further north — the DNR's own numbers back up what I saw growing up here: a genuinely strong muskie fishery (the 2022 survey averaged just under 48" across 46 adult fish), naturally-reproducing walleye, and pike that regularly blow past the protected slot. It anchors the whole northern lakes region — Cass Lake and Leech Lake are both a short drive from town if the Bemidji bite is off. If you're heading up this way for the first time, budget a slow morning like mine into the trip. Not every outing needs to end with a livewell full of fish to be worth the drive.

• Check current conditions before you commit to a launch time — glass-calm mornings up here are gorgeous but often mean a slower bite.
• Nymore Beach is a solid public launch, but Cass Lake's Hoodoo Point ramp is worth the 15-minute drive if you want more structure to work with.
